OSHP President's Message By Andrew Gibler, PharmD, 2019-2020 OSHP President
Gratitude is a strong emotional appreciation for what has come into our experience. I firmly believe gratitude helps us build resilience in our personal and professional lives. Yet often what I truly have the most gratitude for is what I daily take for granted. It is the people who have come into my life and blessed me with lasting and enriching relationships.
I think of my spouse who tirelessly loves, and gives, and raises our 3 beautiful children who were brought into our lives when they were infants.
I think of our children, full of energy and life, trying our patience and testing us in ways I could not imagine, yet constantly warming our hearts and bringing smiles to our faces – and laughter, too! They make us better people and they will grow up too quickly.
I think of their birth mothers who loved them so much they wanted for their child what they understood they could not provide given their circumstances.
I think of my Dad, who passed away earlier this year from Parkinson’s. He left us too early, but his shortened life influenced me like none other and taught me too many lessons to count.
I think of our friends who enrich our lives and support us in so many little ways in our journey.
I think of my pharmacy mentors, nearing retirement and passing the torch to our generation. Wow, thanks to them our profession has evolved a lot, even in the last 10 years. We’ve moved from the burden of proving our worth to the burden of achieving higher and higher expectations for our profession. I am thankful for that, too.
When I do not take the time to appreciate these people, and even this great profession we were brought into (well, I stumbled into it, but that’s another story), it is easier to feel the stress and inundation of life. Gratitude shifts my thinking and positively re-balances my emotions. We are truly fortunate people when we think about the beautiful people who have come into our lives over the years and influenced us, motivated us, moved us to love more, to give more and to be better.
As I write this, Thanksgiving is only a few days away and I will take the time to really reflect on these wonderful people. I hope you can, too.
Sincerely,
-Andrew Gibler
Fall Seminar Recap By Ryan Gibbard, PharmD, BCPS and Kylee Kastelic, RPh
On November 16th, approximately 260 pharmacy practitioners, students, industry partners, and residency exhibitors met for CE and networking at the 2019 Fall Seminar held in the Robertson Collaborative Life Sciences Building (RLSB) at the OHSU waterfront campus in Portland. With clinical topics like pulmonary hypertension and atypical drugs of abuse to law and patient safety topics including Just Culture and Pharmacy Technician scope-of-practice, programing for acute care, ambulatory care, students and technicians, there was something for everyone at Fall Seminar this year.
Members of the OSHP Education Affairs Council spent months identifying topics and speakers, arranging event locations, catering, and prizes with the support of our association management team. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this process. We are eager to hear from attendees about your experience and you should have received an email with a link to a survey. Your feedback is important to the continued improvement of the event and is valuable to the Council as we look for topics and speakers for 2020 and beyond. Thank you in advance for taking a few minutes to complete that feedback survey
On behalf of the OSHP Board of Directors and the Educational Affairs Council, thank you to all our participants, speakers, exhibitors and sponsors. We hope to see you all in April in Sunriver, OR for the 2020 OSHP Annual Seminar. If you are interested in becoming involved in the planning of these educational seminars, please contact [email protected] and you will be connected with the correct council or committee. We look forward to hearing from you!
Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday season and a Happy New Year.
