Psychedelics: The Therapeutics and Safety of Old Drugs Reborn with a New Purpose
Presented by Dana Bojorquez, PharmD, DABAT - Pacific University School of Pharmacy
The use of psychedelic agents as adjunctive treatments for psychiatric disorders is an area of research that continues to gain traction. In 2017, the FDA designated the use of 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a Breakthrough Therapy, and Phase 3 clinical trials are currently underway to assess effectiveness. Just last year, Oregon voters passed Measure 109, which allows the manufacture, delivery, administration of psilocybin at supervised, licensed facilities (after a 2-year development period). Although psilocybin and MDMA are not yet available legally, it is likely that they will be soon, and pharmacists should begin to familiarize themselves with their use to treat psychiatric disorders. After this session, participants will be able to summarize the available literature and ongoing research in the use of these psychedelic agents in mental illness.
